Aalto on Tracks Posted 26.04.2010

First there was a group of student and a need to do something totally original and unconventional in order to honor the beginning of a new era which the formation of Aalto University had initiated. Then there was an idea to bring Aalto University about for the world to see and to unite people from different parts of the university’s vast organization. Furthermore there was a dream to participate in the Shanghai World Expo.

To put this all into one an exciting concept was crystallized: to take a group of people from Aalto on a train trip from Helsinki to Shanghai World Expo. The project Aalto on Tracks was born. The project has many purposes and sides. All together some 80 students, professors, staff members and collaborators are about to travel with a private train from Helsinki to Shanghai World Expo. The road is long: in practice it means over 10 000 kilometers and a week on tracks!

The week on the train will be used wisely. Within the physical frames allowed by the train, a large variety of activities will be taking place, including pretty much everything from workshops and short lectures to game nights, improvisation courses and theme parties; it’s all up to the participants. All participants have been encouraged to take part in the event planning. Shared ideas are the basis for making Aalto on Tracks an experience of a lifetime for the participants.

The goals of Aalto on Tracks are to take Aalto University, Finland and Finnish education to the world. Aalto on Tracks aspires to unite Aalto people and create an unforgettable learning experience for everyone who hopped on the train in Helsinki.

Aalto on Tracks is a unique demonstration of the Aalto spirit, its open environment and courage to do unexpected things. But most of all Aalto on Tracks is a showcase by students, their ideas, inspiration, motivation and capability to be active initiators.

Aalto on Tracks is an event initiated, organized and produced solely by students of Aalto University.
