Aalto–Tongji Design Factory is a joint project between Aalto University and Tongji University. It brings together people by creating interaction between different disciplines - from universities, companies and the society. The heart of the project is to create new ways and approaches for fields of business, design and technology to meet – to create better life for people through more sustainable future.

ATDF leads the way towards a paradigm shift in education and business by providing a constantly developing environment for collaboration between the different stakeholders. It is all about love, design, business and engineering.

ATDF is a permanent, creative environment enabling and inspiring interdisciplinary co-creation, interaction and learning between students, teachers, researchers and industry of the two universities and respective nations involved.

The first joint activities will begin in autumn 2010, through courses, seminar series’ and industry projects. The first Double Degree Master’s programme is planned to begin in 2011.

The Place
Aalto-Tongji Design Factory is a 1000m2 working environment enabling creative work, knowledge sharing and experience exchange. All facilities are designed for flexible use, with free interaction and prototyping made as easy as possible. Spaces can be easily modified and rearranged for various set-ups and different purposes of use. Meanwhile, the overall layout of the Factory encourages open communication and spontaneous encounters.
ATDF is located at Zhangwu Road 100, Yangpu District, Shanghai.


Sino-Finnish Centre
ATDF is the first phase in the process of building a Sino-Finnish Center at Tongji University in cooperation with Aalto and Tongji Universities. The Sino-Finnish Centre will become a hub for interaction, bringing together different stakeholders of both nations involved, in collaboration with renowned international universities and companies, enabling the creation of something unique and new.
